FAQs for Step 8: Start a Research Scrapbook or Journal

Perhaps having a scrapbook is a bit on the touchy feely side, and therefore not for everyone. As you propel yourself into researching a business idea, you’re probably getting extremely busy, which leaves little time for less important tasks. If some of the suggested tasks are less important to you, feel free to ignore them. At a minimum, we recommend you get a suitable notebook and keep a journal to jot down bits of information. You will notice that most professionals have some sort of log book or journal. Doing at least this much will ensure that you have a record to turn to later if needed. The rest of the suggestions listed in this Step are certainly optional or at least can be put off until you feel a need for them.
With that said, don’t underestimate the power of journaling. One of the biggest challenges new business owners experience is the isolation. Many of those starting businesses have always worked for someone else, and been part of someone else’s team. Once you’re out on your own, you are more likely to long for ways to nurture yourself and maintain balance. In business, if you tend to be a workaholic, you can easily drift into working yourself into the ground. A journal can be highly valuable for gaining back and maintaining your personal balance. And a balanced you is far more likely to run a successful business.
